The Making of Star Wars: The Definitive Story Behind the Original Film by J.W. Rinzler
Del Rey Publishing
Review by Lando da Pimp
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull may not have been the sequel we have been waiting for, but the release of the new film has revived the franchise and gives us The Complete Making of Indiana Jones. Disappointed fans who wish to relive the greatness of the other films must have this book. The title says it all.
Author J.W. Rinzler, also wrote "The Making of Star Wars."
The book begins with a forward from Steven Speilberg who discusses the franchise and why it was important for him, Lucas, and Ford felt that it was time to put on the fedora.
The most interesting part of the book is the beginning of the book that discusses the origin of the character. Originally going to be called Indiana Smith. And just like in the film he was named after Lucas's dog Indiana.
The making of each film is detailed beginning with the origins of the stories and the history of the "treasures" such as the Ark or the Holy Grail. Numerous interviews with the cast and crew detail behind the scenes stories.
Hundreds of images including storyboards, concept paintings, and set design schematics from the Lucas Film Archives. Many of these never before seen images make this book an amazing read for hardcore fans. Its very rare this day in age with the internet for film geeks to not have seen making of photographs.
Overall
The Indiana Jones films are way behind compared to the amount of books that have been written about Star Wars. To say this is the most impressive comprehensive Indiana Jones resource wouldn't say much. I couldn't imagine what could be missing.
