Spiderwick Chronicles (Blu-Ray)

With five successful Harry Potter films, movie studios are grabbing up every young adult fantasy book they can find. Not all of them are very good but, the Spiderwick Chronicles exceeds the mediocore fantasy films of late.

Jared, his twin brother Simon, sister Mallory, and mom move into the former home of their great-uncle Spiderwick. After his parents divorce Jared is hit especially hard by his father's departure. He constantly acts out against his family, hoping that his father will come and take him away. In his acting out he discovers a hidden dumb-waiter that leads to a secret room where he finds the Spiderwick Chronicles, a field guide to the magical realm compiled by his great-uncle Spiderwick.

Ignoring the warning to open the book, Jared enrages, the house “brownie” Thimbletack. By opening the book, Jared, has reawakened the goblins and their master Mulgrath who wants to aquire powerful secrets inside the book. This leads to an all out goblin battle, as they attempt to break the circle of protection that is the only thing that protects Jared and his family.

Special Features
A nice collection of featurerette gives us a glimp into the books and the movies. Also included is a collection of deleted scenes, tv spots, and trailers.

Overall
The Spiderwick Chronicles has everything that makes up a great kids' film. The spooky house with secret rooms, magical world, and the young child playing the part of the hero. The film doesn't have the same impact the Potter films do but, it is a fun adventure / fantasy film. This is also my first review of the new Paramount Blu-Ray discs. The film looks great in HD, and that includes the special effects, which usually don't look as good.
