There Will Be Blood (Blu-Ray)
Review by Lando da Pimp
Paramount has now embraced the Blu-Ray format, and I can't be happier. One of the first films to get the Blu-Ray Treatment is There Will Be Blood. Already a great film looking even more amazing in HD.
Paul Thomas Anderson has given me new faith that he can still make great films. I loved looking behind the scenes of the porn industry in Boogie Nights. I didn't understand nor want to understand Magnolia, and don't get me started with Punch Drunk Love.
With his latest however, he struck gold, or Oil, with There Will Be Blood. Paul Thomas Anderson directed, produced, and wrote There Will Be Blood loosley based on the Upton Sinclair's 1927 novel Oil.
The Story
There Will Be Blood follows silver miner turned oil man Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day Lewis). The film opens up with Daniel discovering oil on one of his silver claims. Eventually Daniel begins drilling for the oil with his own extraction technique. A worker killed in an oil accident leaves his orphaned son H.W. who Daniel takes as his own.
By 1911 Daniel, along with his son HW, have become very successful oil men in California. He begins to ruthlessly buy up all the oil land he can in Southern California. A man named Paul Sunday approaches Daniel with an oil lead that he is willing to sell. His families property sits a top of the largest oil deposit.
Daniel attempts to buy the property from the family under the guise of hunting quail. Paul's father is about to sell the land, but Eli (Paul's twin brother) knows of the oil, not allowing Daniel to cheat his family. Daniel pays the family $10,000 for the land, and puts the money into founding his church, the Church of the Third Revelation. Eli proclaims that he is a faith healer. This annoys Daniel who continues to attempt to take advantage and cheat the local town.
Throughout the rest of the film Daniel suffers great loss for his quest for power and success. His son loses his hearing in an oil accident and ultimatley grows up resenting his father. A man claiming to be his brother attempts to cheat Daniel out of money. When Daniel discovers that he is not who he says he is he murders him in cold blood.
Special Features
The special 2 Disc Collector's Edition come packed with a nice small collection of special features. A collection of additional scenes along with a featurette "The Story of Petroleum" Also included are pictures and a featurette "Dailies Gone Wild" featuring outtakes from the making of the film. Perhaps the best part of the 2 disc collectors edition is the packaging that looks like an old aged record book.
Overall
There Will Be Blood is a fascinating look at a man will stop at nothing to achieve the ultimate success. Family, life, and the good of man is thrown away; with greed and sin lead to ultimatly lonlyness. Daniel bluntly admits "I hate most people," "I want to earn enough money so I can get away from everyone." Daniel Day Lewis allows the audience to like this character that you feel you can trust to at the end despise.
