Welcome back to the 80's! In this game developed by Rockstar, you work your way up the ladder until no one stands ahead of you as the kingpin of crime in the sunny city of Vice. Heads are gonna roll!
First off, I gotta say this is as fun a game as I've ever played. I laughed out loud, cursed the TV, stared gape jawed at plot twists, and sat on the edge of my seat running from the law/pissed gang members. This game is a prequel to GTA III, so you can guess the gameplay is the same. You run around completing missions for various thugs and stealing anything you want for your getaways: cars, boats, helicopters, sea-planes, mopeds, and motorcycles. The motorcycles are the best. There is nothing better than cruising around on a crotch rocket dodging cars, and jumping stairways. Then pop a wheelie as you cruise by a cop just for the hell of it.
This game does have some innovations over its predecessor, but that still doesn't wipe out the problems. But first the good: You're still able to buy property, giving you more save spots throughout the city. But this time some of them generate revenue upon completing their missions. This is awesome, and I think that Rockstar Games is onto something here. If this grows, it could enter into a simulation type game where every time you play it's different. Also, the missions are more complex. But the game really stands out in the music department. There are over 10 hours of original music from the 80's. Finally, this time around you can enter numerous buildings to hold them up or buy items.
The graphics are nice, but there are some definite bugs. There are glitchy moments, control issues, and more than once I got stuck in a wall. The frame rate lags when too much is going on for the system to process. If it weren't for these issues and the fact that it didn't differ from GTA III in gameplay and style, it'd get a 10.
Overall, I loved this game. It was very very very fun. And the open ended game play makes GTA: Vice City stand out among the rest. Get ready to be the boss.
