LEGO's Alpha Team Sets
by Lando Da Pimp
I have never purchased any of LEGO's Alpha Team sets from the past few years. They always looked cool but I didn't know much about them. I asked LEGO to send me a few sets to review and I am glad they did. I like Bionicle but I love the Alpha Team sets. I think the main reason is that the Alpha Team sets use the basic LEGO pieces including the traditional size figures.
For those who don't know about the Alpha Team sets here is a basic description. The Alpha Team is made up of hero characters led by Dash. This team battles to defeat the evil Ogel with aid of a variety of vehicles. In addition, the team has a robot sidekick, Tee Vee. On LEGO.com you can read a number of on-line comic books as well as comic books that are included in the different sets. For 2004 LEGO released a number of Alpha Team sets:
Set 4748Ogel's Mountain Fortress 2004
Ogel's secret mountain base is extremely fun set to build and play with. The look of the base resembles a skull making it even cooler. The base is built upon a unique raised baseplate of snow and ice. In front are two ice blocks that encase a figure in ice. In the back of the base you can control the crane to pick up the energy spheres. The crane however does not have the ability to reach over the wall of the base. I wish it had a longer range of motion. But that small detail can be overlooked because of the great way the Alpha Team breaches the base. Using the Solar Speeder you can shoot a rubber-rocket at the target to open up the pathway allowing the team to enter the base. I am always really mad when a rocket launcher toy doesn't work the way it's supposed to, but shooting at the target with this set does work very well. With the flexibility of the speeder you have a good control over the aim of the rocket.
This is a really cool set. I love the icy skull look and feel of the base. This is probably the best set to buy if you want to start collecting the Alpha Team sets. The set comes with the Solar Speeder that is similar to a dune buggy. The rocket launcher shoots the rocket a great distance. Also included are the figures of Dash, Ogel, Arrow, Ogel Agents (2). Also included is the Sky Spider vehicle along with the ice orbs.
Set 4743 Ice Blade 2004
The Ice Blade works as both a snowmobile and as a helicopter. The vehicle hunts down ice orbs and outraces the Ogel agents. The vehicle transformation works very well. When the Ice Blade is in the snowmobile form the helicopter blades are lowered to form around the vehicle.
This is probably my least favorite of the Alpha Team sets. Don't get me wrong I love the transformation feature that the vehicle has but the set is a bit flimsy. The set includes the figure Charge along with an ice orb.
Set 4745 Blue Eagle Vs. Snow Crawler 2004 The Snow Crawler by far is my favorite vehicle. The evil agents of Ogel use the Snow Crawler to plant the ice orbs in to the ice. Like the Ice Blade set the Snow Crawler transforms into a flying insectoid vehicle.
Attempting to stop the Ogel agent is Dash Justice in the Blue Eagle. The Blue Eagle transforms into an Ice Glider to capture the Snow Crawler with its claw.
I love the look and functionality of the Snow Crawler. The legs have a lot of flexibility in the legs to mimic how a spider would walk. The wings fold down to become a snow glider. A claw on the back of the vehicle picks up different items. The set comes with Dash, Ogel Agent, and only one ice orb.
Set 4746 Mobile Command Center 2004 When attempting to track down Ogel's secret base the Alpha Team uses the Mobile Command Center. Using the two snow scooters Arrow and Charge send back reports of their findings. The armored sides of the vehicle lower deploying the thermoblaster.
This is a really great Command Center. On either side of the vehicle are the Snow Scooters that are held in place but can easily be released by use of a tension string. The release of the snow scooters work very well but don't push to hard or your scooter can fall apart. I also like the functionality of the doors open to reveal the interior of the center. Here you can place the different figures in front of the different consoles. The set comes with four Alpha Team agents including TeeVee, an Ogel Agent, and a few Ice Orbs.
